On a serene Sunday morning, reminiscent of times past, perhaps evoking lines from poets such as Robert Browning, ('grow old along with me, the best is yet to be'), Menston Rangers progressed into the quarter final of the League Cup.
Despite the pitch not being conducive to beautiful football, both teams contributed to an excellent game, with plenty of skill on display. Menston began to wrest control after a tense opening and minutes after a lively Miller's instinctive volley glanced the post, an excellent Texel goalkick fell to Ainsworth who overcame the attentions of the Bradford defence to eventually walk the ball into the net. The advantage was quickly doubled when the target man struck again to complete a good move and Menston were comfortably ahead at the break with Lambertino excelling in the middle of the pitch in a key battle with an outstanding opposition number six.
Bradford Central worked hard and it took a superb performance from man of the match Barker to keep them at bay after they had reduced the deficit 10 minutes into the second half. The home crowd remained on edge until good work and a cross from Ainsworth was turned into his own net by the Central keeper with five minutes to play. Menston were able to see the match out comfortably and gain an overdue and well deserved victory.
